The Paleo Confession

I suck at the Paleo diet. When I see my meal options, I see a gaping chasm of foods that make me happy.

Concomitantly, I have heard from multitudes of CrossFitter’s that going Paleo not only changed their body but improved their athletic prowess . Daigle, author of Daigle Breathes Fire,  spoke at length on Saturday night about the Paleo diet. And, I am grateful for this conversation. He explained that he saw explosive changes in his strength and endurance after even a short time on Paleo. He also flipped the coin and revealed that when he occasionally “cheats” on the weekend with a cookie or ice cream there is an immediate effect on his WODs. His performance suffers.

Those are strong words. Yet, I know them to be true. I have erred on the side of not eating enough because I have been wired to think that all this protein is going to make me fat. I also think somehow eating all of these vegetables are going to make me a boring person. No scientific evidence to prove a corrolarly between vegetable and boredom, its simply something drilled into me. In fact, lets be wildly honest, I have been a sugar addict for a full 4.5 years.

Sugar is seductive. You never see commercials on TV of  an empty candle lit dining room with a half empty serving bowl of brocolli, clothes strewn on the floor leading to the bedroom.  You see a bottle of champagne, a half eaten chocolate cake, coffee and creamy profiteroles followed by the ribald undertones of sex.

Oh, and my precious Diet Coke…I know you miss our loving courtship.

If you have ever watched Real Sex on HBO (WHICH YOU ALL HAVE), you will remember an informative segment on the use of food as an aphrodiasicac. A partner will cover their partner in spaghetti, chocolate sauce or even peanut butter for a  heightened response.  Again, you do not hear someone gasping for more Agave to be dripping off their body. You do not hear, “Oh lover, slap another non-farmed salmon onto me.” You get the point.

This week I need to dial my diet in.

On a positive note, I have been taking copious amounts of Fish Oil and am happy to report an uptick in mood and very litte soreness after workouts.  And, according to the three scales I weigh myself, I am down 2lbs.

Amanda, I have never read a blog before – did not actually know what a blog was….but am compleltely captivated by yours and look forward to it – so keep it up – informative – but more importantly entertaining – i am trying to do the paleo as well and wish I could say that it was the health and well being that was motivating me cause its not – but there is a certain look to those crossfit girls that is very motivating. So trust me do it now cause its a lot harder decades later. xo

You are so kind. I am having more fun with this blog and CrossFit than I ever expected. The truly tough part is the food because this is not even a diet or a caloric reduction, Paleo changes your body from the inside out and challenges your understanding of the food industry and wellness.

I agree with you. I want the body first and foremost but I also know I want to feel good. Having sullied my body with crap from my years in NY, I cannot wait to feel clean and that I am not abusing my body.

having a good body is nothing without feeling good. i would honestly take feeling good over the body, well maybe not, but it is certainly tied. sooner better than later is definitely correct. every year (esp after 40) it gets harder and harder!!! keep up the good work and keep me laughing!!!!!
