Huge news too! As Rx’d, the purveyors of apparell for the fitness counter culture, have offered to sponsor my blog! And, I am thrilled to offer CrossFitters a coupon code for $5.00 off the “I AM A HUNTER GATHERER” tee-shirt. Use Code “Primal” for the discount. Click on the picture! Mens and womens sizes available.
I have been emailing with Marcus Dedina from As Rx’d. I came across his tshirts and blog the other night while on Twitter.
As you may know, I twitter on behalf of CrossFit NewEngland. Before you STOP READING because I used the word “Twitter,” hang on (i.e. my mother thinks Twitter is “MyFace” and does not understand how I make money teaching people and companies social media. Her quote: “Why would I want a “FacePage” … so I can see my 60 year old friends doing cartwheels on their profiles?” “Ma, if your friends on doing cartwheels at 60, please have them get in touch with me)
To the point, Twitter is an excellent communication tool to see what all other CrossFit affiliates are doing, finding paleo recipes, talking about WODs and all else CrossFit (all in 140 characters or less). Insert shameless promotion: If you or a loved one needs digitial strategy, social media or a blog, just hit up your’s truly.
Marcus says about CrossFit and himself: Unlike the lame asses [mentions names of friends], I’ve been rockin’ and rollin’ my entire life! I grew up on the mean streets of Portage, IN (population 36,505), hustlin’ just to get by (that’s a lie). Years ago my dad said to me, “BOY! Get a job, get a wife, and get out of my house!” I ended up living with him for five more years before I woke up one day and found myself living in Hawaii. Shortly after that, on one fateful day in the park, these G.I. Joe looking characters asked me if I wanted to work out with them. They were doing something called CrossFit, and the rest is history.
I asked Marcus if he would consider sponsoring me on this 365 day journey of CrossFit as Rx’d for Amanda Beals. He agreed. Where else in the whole fucking world can Lane Bryant get a ripped athlete from the Hawaii to selflessly help out a broad in need? No where except at CrossFit. Marcus and I have a phone call set up and I will report to you shortly on whether or not Hawaii’s iconic pig on a spit with pineapple glaze is Paleo approved.
More philosophically, for Marcus and his company, the notion of AS Rx’D is quite serious.
From an etymological perspective, Rx means recipe translates into “take thou.” Another speculative derviation of the Rx, derived from the astrolgoical sign associated with Jupiter. By affixing the Rx on a bottle or tincture, some apothacaries believed they were sealing the antidotes with Jupiter’s blessings.
Either way, “As Rx’d” is about taking a recipe/script. Yet, this is not a Rx you get from anyone else but yourself. You are the omega. What you do, think and feel determines who you are. And, pretending that there are no choices like, “I guess I will just be overweight during my life,” or “Everyone hates their job so I will stay for shit money, bad treatment and continue to drone on in a company that does not make my heart sing” is bunk and its bullshit.
As quoted on the Living Life as Prescribed blog, Melissa Alexis Cvjeticanin writes:
I carry what I refer to as the ‘CrossFit mentality’ throughout many aspects in my life. The CrossFit mentality is formed by the CrossFit community, in that everyone supports each other and acts as one big family unit. I find myself giving more encouragement to people not just at the gym, but outside of it as well. My relationships with friends and family have improved and I am happier in general.
Living life Rx’d to me has meant living life to my fullest and not selling myself short; it means never give up, no matter how tired and worn out I could possibly be, because there is always a finish line up ahead.
As this is an honest journal, I will be completely frank. I am not sure I can do Paleo. I am struggling, struggling badly. I can do the workouts but my mind overrides the food. I am erring on the side of not eating much because I don’t want to fail. And, given that I blog and do digital strategy for work, I have an abominable schedule. I wake up at 10 a.m., work on my computer for a few hours, get an iced green tea from Starbucks and go to CrossFit. After CrossFit, I head back home, work more on computer and watch a shitload of HULU until 2 a.m.
This is a whole lot harder than I expected. CrossFit, eating well, living a balanced life. I still have the frenetic blood of New York in my veins.

Stay strong Beals. Don’t be tempted by the darkside. We all beleive in you, and know that you are as tough in the kitchen as you are in the gym. BE STRONG.

Sorry, Elaine. That pic was too cool to ignore! I don’t think God kills kittens if you miss CrossFit; God cries when you miss CrossFit. And, at this point, I am laid out on my back from a stupid back injury today. OY VEY!!

Hi Amanda – Congratulations on blog sponsorship! No small feat in itself. Thanks for the t-shirt discount, too. I’ve developed and used computers for a while, and 2 things I’ve learned might help: (1) take some breaks, even if you have to schedule them into your BB or e-calendar system. Go outside and walk around, do some stretching, (don’t go to the mall though!), and (2) turn off the TV. All that audio and (especially) video input gets processed by your (wild and crazy) brain, and it effects everything else you do. Substitute activities include reading a book (the kind you need 2 hands to manage, not a Kindle!), listening to your iPod, or riding your bike (still looking for a mtn bike?) If I hear any reports of kittens gone missing in your neighborhood, I’ll be sending black helicopters to take the appropriate action!
Cheers,
Greg
